Fall Pond Maintenance
In the Fall your pond plants are thriving from their summer growth. However, soon the winter freezes will cause all that beautiful lush foliage to turn brown and ugly. If left unattended to this foliage will die and fall into the pond causing excessive mess and eventual cleanup in the Spring. Therefore, we recommend pruning all pond plants to within 1 inch of the water surface. In the North Carolina Area this process should be performed after the first frost or sometime in November.

Winter Pond Maintenance
The bottom line for winterization is maintenance.
Roughly 70 percent of pond owners in the colder climates decide to shut down their system because they don’t enjoy tending to their water garden during the bitter months of the winter. The aesthetic rewards of the winter pond are absolutely worthwhile, so by all means; don’t be afraid to keep the system running as long as possible. Shutting down a pond during winter is also an option. Just be sure you take precautionary measures to preserve fish, plant, and pump life.
Our geographic area experiences occasional long periods of exceptionally cold weather, the pump won’t be enough to keep a hole open in the ice, and you’ll want to consider adding a floating Aquascape Pond De-icer. Controlled by a thermostat, the unit only runs when the water temperature is at or below freezing, heating only the surrounding water to just above freezing, and then shutting off again.
The best thing you can do if you if we experience long periods of freezing weather is to incorporate a combination of the pump and floating deicer. Be sure to position them so the two units are not near each other, otherwise the Aquascape Pond De-icer will run continuously in order to heat the that water that’s constantly being circulated by the pump.
Winter Pond Maintenance & caring for your Youngsville, Wake Forest & Raleigh NC area ponds
During the winter months can mean different things, depending on where you live. We offer winter pond maintenance, and pond cleaning service so your pond can enter ready for winter. Simply removing your pond’s excess debris and adding Aquascape Activated Pond Carbon should set you up for the winter. If you live in the north, you may begin to see ice formation instead. This is what most of us in our area will see from time to time, and we’ll spend the next few months longingly viewing our ponds from indoors.
During these frosty months, you can either keep your pond running for the winter, or shut it down. To shut your pond down, first unplug the pump, pull it out of the pond, and store it in a frost-free location, submerged in a bucket of water to keep the seals from drying out.
Pond Netting
Pond netting is sometimes needed when excessive leaves have the potential of making their way into the pond. If your pond is in the direct vicinity of large trees then you will want to consider netting your pond. In the Youngsville, Wake Forest, & Raleigh NC area this needs to be done before the first frost or usually sometime in October. Fall netting is an easy process, a net is stretched across the pond and anchored with rocks and/or pins. It is best not to have the net resting on the water surface since it will be difficult to remove with all the debris on it. Once all the leaves have fallen then the net is removed for the winter.
